This Thursday, the Penny Stamps Lecture Series presents Sarah Chayes, a former Peace Corps volunteer and distinguished author and journalist. From her beginning as a freelance reporter, Chayes has worked for The Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio among other news outlets, and has received Foreign Press Club and Sigma Delta Chi awards for her coverage of the Kosovo War.

In 2002, Chayes gave up reporting and moved to Kandahar, Afghanistan in order to focus on the country’s social and economic development, and has written two books grounded in her experience there: “The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban” and “Comprehensive Action Plan for Afghanistan,” the latter being an informed analysis of the socio-economic issues being faced by Afghanistan today and a possible solution.

Today, Chayes is regarded as a prominent authority on Afghan affairs and has authored a blog for the New York Times website titled “A Voice From Kandahar.”
