When Justin Benson received the phone call last night from current LSA Student Government President Andrew Yahkind telling him he would be the next vice president of LSA-SG, he was both relieved and excited.

Benson and president-elect Joanna Slott, who ran on the Students 4 Michigan ticket, were the victors in the race for LSA-SG's two highest offices, soundly beating Michigan Progressive Party presidential candidate Joe Golden and running mate Dan Ray.

Slott and Benson netted 1,957 votes, capturing 61.5 percent. Golden and Ray got 1,226.

In total, 3,183 votes were cast in this year's LSA-SG elections, representing just under 20 percent of the 15,965 students enrolled in LSA. Voter turnout was high compared to previous elections. There were 2,153 votes cast two years ago in the LSA-SG election and 1,367 votes in last year's election.

Slott could not be reached for comment last night.

Four of her major priorities for when she takes office include increasing the number of LSA minors, providing transportation for away athletic contests, developing a study abroad program to Israel and making class registration easier, Slott told The Michigan Daily last week.

"We're going to do incredible things for the students of LSA," Benson said.

He named more affordable test preparation options for students as one of his goals.

With Slott's experience and his knowledge of the University administration, Benson said he and Slott will make a good team when they take over.

Golden said he plans to stay involved in student government. He is on MSA's Academic Affairs Committee.

S4M took eight of the representative seats, with one going to MPP.

"It's a reflection of our candidates and how hard they worked," said S4M party chair Robbie O'Brien.

Clark Ruper, chair of the Student Conservative Party, said he has been pleased with S4M's tenure as LSA-SG leaders and hopes they continue the tradition.

Ruper said SCP will be return in future LSA-SG races, but it is uncertain in what form.
