Report: Calvin Magee expected to be in consideration for South Florida head coaching job

BY TIM ROHAN

A source has told ESPN.com’s Ivan Maisel that Michigan associate head coach/offensive coordinator Calvin Magee is expected to be in the mix for the open head coaching position at the University of South Florida.

Magee, 46, has served his position under Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez for the past two seasons and was with Rodriguez for his entire tenure at West Virginia (’01-’07). And Magee got his start in coaching with the same program of which he could potentially become the next head coach — South Florida.

The Bulls’ football program started in 1996 and Magee coached tight ends and special teams that first year before becoming the team’s running backs coach the next four years he spent at the university.

During Magee’s first season in Ann Arbor, Michigan finished last in the Big Ten in both scoring (20.2 points per game) and total offensive yards (290.8 yards per game). But the Wolverines saw improvement in 2009 as they finished fourth in scoring (29.5) and seventh in total offensive yards (290.8).

If Magee ultimately does end up at South Florida he would have coached the spread offense under Rodriguez for nine seasons and the Bulls also have employed a version of the spread offense.
