In Other Ivory Towers: NYU initiates smoking ban

BY SARA BOBOLTZ

Smoking will not be allowed within 15 feet of any New York University building entrance when a new ban goes into effect next fall, according to the University's daily newspaper, Washington Square News.

Currently, smoking within university buildings is prohibited. WSN reported that the smoking ban was proposed to students in an e-mail from Alison Leary, NYU senior vice president for operations, last October, and about 84 percent of students polled by the administration approved of it.

However, students have recently voiced disapproval, WSN reported.

"Unless someone tells me I'm bothering them and asks me to go somewhere else, I'm not moving," NYU freshman Stephen Cahill said in the article.

Public safety officers may remind smokers to stand at least 15 feet away from building entrances, but the ban will primarily be enforced by students and members of the community.

Izzo shows support for new MSU logo

According to the State News, Michigan State University’s men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo spoke out in support of the school’s new logo during his press conference last Monday.

“For all of you out there that are complaining, shame on you, because…we are trying to do what’s best for Michigan State University,” Izzo said in the article.

The new logo, a variation of the Spartan helmet, has faced heavy opposition from many students and fans. It is part of an effort by MSU's athletics program to rebrand itself, but other details will not be revealed until April.

The State News reported that current logos used by the university’s various athletic teams are not consistent — with some teams using the block “S” and others using a Spartan helmet.

AU students receive home-cooked meals

American University students tired of less-than-stellar cafeteria fare will soon be able to join members of the surrounding community for dinners in their homes, as reported by AU’s daily newspaper, the Eagle.

Sponsored by the school’s Community and Local Government Relations office, the new initiative aims to foster a positive relationship between students and local residents.

According to the Eagle, many of these residents are graduates of AU.

“We thought a nice way (for people to meet) would be for students and neighbors to get together over a meal,” Penny Pagano, community and local government relations director, said in the article.
