One year after giving up a 3-0 lead and losing to Ferris State on Senior Night, senior David Rohlfs made sure that disappointment didn't repeat itself.

Just over five minutes into the third period with Western Michigan on the power play, Rohlfs snapped a backhand shot behind Western Michigan goalie Riley Gill to put Michigan ahead for good in tonight's 3-1 win at Yost Ice Arena.

Rohlfs battled a Bronco defender for the puck near the right boards and tipped it to the middle of the ice, where he fired the shot on net for his 15th goal of the year. Senior captain Matt Hunwick assisted on the play, his 17th of the season.

Unlike last night's game in Kalamazoo where Michigan (16-6-0 CCHA, 21-9-0 overall) clearly outplayed the Broncos, tonight's outcome was in question until freshman Chris Summers deposited an empty netter for his first career goal in the game's final minute.

The game remained scoreless throughout the first period. Michigan might have held the advantage in shots at that point (6-4), but the Broncos had the best chance. With a few seconds left in the opening stanza, Jeff Lovecchio skated in alone on Michigan goalie Billy Sauer, but missed the net.

Sauer played well, turning away 19 of the 20 shots he faced. He added two dramatic stops on a 3-on-1 rush late in the second period that kept the game tied.

The one that got by him came with Michigan on the power play midway through the second period. Western Michigan freshman Mark Letestu battled for the puck near the Michigan bench and got free along the left boards. With just one Michigan defender back, Letetsu went in hard on net. Sauer got down into the splits to cover the near post, but Letestu found a way behind him for the short-handed marker.

The Wolverine's first goal came just 40 seconds into the second period. Sophomore Jack Johnson notched the first goal of the game with a wrist shot from the point. It was his 14th goal of the year, which puts him one tally away from tying the record for most in a season by a sophomore defenseman.

Michigan put 45 shots on Gill tonight, its highest shot total since an Oct. 28 loss to Northeastern.
