Notebook: Robinson not worried about lack of depth on defense

He didn’t need a question to respond to.

After listening to part of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez’s half-hour press conference, new defensive coordinator Greg Robinson sat down at a table and immediately responded to Rodriguez's concerns about the Wolverines’ defensive depth.

“I’m going to make a statement: I’m not worried about our depth,” Robinson said at Michigan Media Day on Sunday. “I just think it’s a matter of developing it. I noticed that there’s a lot of talk about that. In my mind, it’ll all take care of itself.”

Rodriguez’s worries stem from Michigan having just two senior starters on defense and a unit learning its third system in as many years.

“Our depth is almost all freshmen, or redshirt freshmen, and that makes me nervous,” Rodriguez said. “Again, I'm not making excuses because we expect to play good in all phases. But this is their first year under Coach Robinson's system and I think they've learned it pretty well.”

Robinson is much more focused on fostering a defense that plays well together.

“I think that when it’s all said and done, I think that this group might come together well," Robinson said. "I like the chemistry of it and I can feel it starting to identify itself.”

Rodriguez on Saturday’s scrimmage: Michigan held its first full-scale scrimmage Saturday to see how the underclassmen-heavy Wolverines would perform without coaches giving direction on the field.

His take?

“Our concerns that we have are probably still there — a lack of depth in some positions,” Rodriguez said. “Our young guys probably aren't quite ready to play at the highest level. They may have to play in some spots, and that makes us nervous.”

But what everyone wanted to know was who took the first snap under center.

At first, Rodriguez said he didn’t remember, then added that he thought redshirt junior Nick Sheridan took the first reps with the first stringers. He said freshmen quarterbacks Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson went in second and third, though all will likely see time in the Sept. 5 season opener against Western Michigan.

Saturday’s dress rehearsal helped the coaching staff put together a preliminary depth chart Sunday night. Michigan will hold another full-scale scrimmage on Wednesday.

Senior running back Brandon Minor sat out the scrimmage with an ankle bruise, but Rodriguez said it was just a precaution.

“He doesn't want to miss nothing,” Rodriguez said. “Brandon loves football and he doesn't want to miss anything.”

Deep enough: Though depth issues were raised throughout Michigan Media Day, two positions in particular weren’t included in the wide-ranging concerns.

Rodriguez feels comfortable at tight end with sophomore Kevin Koger and junior Martell Webb. There are also two remaining competitors for the placekicking job, fifth-year senior Jason Olesnavage and freshman Brendan Gibbons.

"We always want to have two tight ends we can count on," Rodriguez said. “We used Kevin a lot last year and will use both those guys even more this year. We feel pretty good about our tight end position.”

To decide between the kickers, Rodriguez placed them in pressure situations in which the team would run one fewer sprint for every kick made, though it is still an open competition, he said.

“We try to make them even more popular, and they've performed pretty well — they really have,” Rodriguez said. “Jason and Brendan Gibbons are probably the top two, and that competition is like quarterback … we may not know until game time.”
