A note on restaurant reviews

BY SHARON JACOBS

Daily Arts has recently attracted attention for an article reviewing @burger, a new restaurant on Liberty Street. Each of the establishment’s eight burger options can be made with a beef, chicken or vegetarian patty.

Our reviewer chose to sample one of @burger’s veggie burgers. The review reflected her experience but also commented on the waitstaff’s attentiveness and the restaurant’s cleanliness.

With the understanding that many readers who would eat at @burger would likely choose a meat patty over a vegetarian one, an addendum was written following the review, which commented on the quality of an @burger beef burger.

The review has attracted many responses that a vegetarian is not “qualified” to review a burger joint, and we politely refute these comments. A restaurant is responsible for all of the food that it serves. Since it is generally impossible for food critics to sample every offering a restaurant serves, it is the critic’s prerogative to choose which menu items he or she wishes to review.

Every review is written from a distinct angle and body of knowledge — the reviewer’s own background is reflected in the piece. As always, Daily Arts will strive to provide a unique student perspective in all reviews, be they of albums, movies, restaurants or anything else.
