MADISON — The No. 10 Wolverines, coming off a spectacular win over Wisconsin, were unable to continue their winning streak as No. 18 Indiana booted them out of the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament this afternoon.

Both teams came out strong and applied offensive pressure, but after eight minutes Indiana was able to find the back of the net. Junior midfielder Eric Alexander sent a hard cross from the right side, finding freshman forward Will Bruin in front of the net. Bruin quickly struck the ball past redshirt junior goalie Patrick Sperry, to bring Indiana up 1-0.

Shortly after the score, redshirt sophomore forward Matt Schmitt was taken down by a Hoosier defender, and later left the game on crutches. The match quickly became more aggressive, with a total of 25 fouls and one yellow card before the final whistle, with a number of potential fouls going uncalled.

Michigan got two quality chances to score before halftime. The first came at 24:20 when junior Mauro Fuzetti got a ball through two Hoosier defenders, finding junior Peri Marosevic open on the left side. Marosevic cut the ball back to the center of the field, and squared up to the net, narrowly missing the left bottom corner of the goal.

The second notable attempt came 18 minutes later when redshirt sophomore Cam Cameron crossed the ball from the left side. After managing to get through three Hoosier defenders the ball barely missed a sliding Fuzetti from the right side.

In the second half the Hoosier goalkeeper, senior Chay Cain, continued to keep his calm as he shut out the Wolverine offense. Three of the six saves he made in the game came in the second half off quality shots from senior Jake Stacy, junior Julian Robles and Marosevic.

Despite the 16 shots the Wolverines took, with six shots on the goal, the early finish from Bruin, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was too much for the Wolverines to overcome, with the final margin being left at 1-0.

Now the Wolverines look to the NCAA tournament seedings, which will be announced Monday night, with the tournament starting next weekend. Michigan is a shoo in for the tournament, and coach Steve Burns is hoping his team uses the loss to the Hoosiers as motivation against its first-round opponent.
