The No. 9 Michigan women’s gymnastics team handed New Hampshire its first home loss of the season, defeating the Wildcats 196.800-195.375 on Saturday.

The dual meet in Durham, N.H. marked the halfway point in the regular season for Michigan. The score could be a sign of good things to come for the Wolverines — they only eclipsed that total twice last season, and not until March 19.

“I think that this meet will give us a great deal of confidence,” Michigan coach Bev Plocki said. “They know they are capable of doing this (regularly). We are thrilled with the night and excited about our score.”

Senior Kylee Botterman, who captured the all-around title in each of the team's initial five contests, won the all-around crown again with a score of 39.575. Botterman also finished first in floor with a score of 9.950.

Botterman also finished second in vault, and later tied for first on beam with teammate and fifth-year senior Jordan Sexton with a score of 9.900.

“I'm excited we finally put a meet together but we should be hitting the meet like we hit tonight every weekend,” Botterman said on Saturday. “I'm really excited for the night, and then once we get back in the gym we will get back to work, because we know that's exactly what we need to be doing for the rest of the season.”

Sexton finished first in bars and beam, both with a score of 9.900 — a strong showing for the fifth-year senior, who has accepted a larger role on the team this season.

“I feel really great about my performance tonight,” Sexton said. “I am starting to feel stronger and stronger each meet, and it's always fun to get out there and perform.”

Added Plocki: “Jordan has been having a wonderful season, which might be a little overshadowed by Kylee's because Kylee is an all-arounder. Jordan has been absolutely outstanding. They're both amazing athletes with a great deal of experience and confidence, and they're doing awesome.”

But Botterman and Sexton weren’t the only individuals who placed on Saturday. The Wolverines had athletes finish in first and second place in every event of the night.

Sophomore Natalie Beilstein finished first in vault with a score of 9.900 and second in floor with an identical score. Fifth-year senior Sarah Curtis took second place in the all-around competition with a score of 39.200.

Michigan wasn't forced to count any falls on the evening, which led to the season-high score.

“We did a lot of team building this week that I thought was great," Sexton said. "It really gave the team a lot of confidence, especially to know that they can do that on the road. Our goal next week is just to have the same performance at home and show our fans what we are capable of.

“We really stayed together as a team, and I think our performances really showed. And I hope that we will just be able to build on this in the weeks to come, because we really did great tonight.”

With Nebraska and Stanford slated to visit Ann Arbor next weekend, Michigan hopes to carry the momentum from the explosive first portion of the season in to the stiffer part of its schedule.

After the performance against New Hampshire, Plocki will be carrying high expectations into the back half of the season.

“It's great to put everything together for a meet and demonstrate that we can compete with anyone in the country,” Plocki said.
