Each week, Daily Sports staffers will fill out ballots, with first-place votes receiving 10 points, second-place votes receiving nine, and so on. Every Monday, the results will be published, with first-place votes in parentheses.
More like this
1. Ohio State (7): It pains us to rank the Buckeyes so high. But come on. Did you see what Ohio State did to Northern Illinois in that first half? Sure, the defense let Garrett Wolfe run wild, but it's hard to blame them for relaxing.
2. Texas (2): The Vince Young-less Horns didn't miss a beat coming off their national championship. Led by new QB Colt McCoy, Texas beat up on an outmanned North Texas squad. In an open field, we've got to give the defending champs some respect.
T3. Notre Dame (2): The Fighting Irish struggled in their opener against Georgia Tech. That didn't deter a couple of our staffers from buying the hype and picking Notre Dame as the top team in the nation.
T3. Auburn (1): Unlike the boys from South Bend, the Tigers actually impressed in their debut against Washington State, thanks to 183 yards from tailback Kenny Irons.
T3. Southern Cal: No Leinart. No Bush. But plenty of love from the Michigan Daily sports staff. Hilariously named quarterback John David Booty appears to be more than ready to take the reins of the Trojan offense.
6. West Virginia: The Mountaineers' schedule looked easy enough before Big East rival Louisville's running back Michael Bush went down for the season. Now, West Virginia has a clear path to an undefeated season.
7. Louisiana State: After dismantling Louisiana-Lafayette, the Tigers have one more cupcake before a big matchup against Auburn. JaMarcus Russell may be the best quarterback you've never heard of.
8. Florida: Gator fans were pleased to see Steve Spurrier trot onto the field before Florida's game against Southern Miss. Unfortunately, he just stopped by to celebrate 100 years of Florida football.
9. Florida State: Wide right and wide left played no part in the Seminoles 13-10 victory over hated rival Miami. Instead, Bobby Bowden finally found a kicker who could hit through the uprights.
10. Oklahoma: The Sooners looked sluggish against UAB this weekend, just squeaking out a seven-point win. But it's hard to keep a team with a player like Adrian Peterson out of the Daily Top 10.
