With one round of the NCAA Finals complete at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, the Michigan men’s golf team is in ninth place, only one spot out qualifying for the championship round of the tournament. The eight teams with the lowest three-round totals play a two-day match play playoff on Friday and Saturday which will determine the nation’s champion.

No. 45 Michigan shot a 12-over, 296, leaving it eight strokes behind No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 1 Georgia for first. The mark also leaves the Wolverines two shots behind the three-team tie for eighth place in the 30-team field. Michigan scored better in the first round than 17 teams that were higher ranked, including six of the nation’s top 10 golf programs.
Sophomores Lion Kim and Alexander Sitompul led Michigan’s effort, both tying for 16th after posting one-over, 72’s. Freshman Matt Thompson also chipped in with a round of four-over, 75.
The second round of action begins 7am Wednesday, but the Wolverines are one of the last teams to tee off at 1:47pm.
