'Man V. Food' V. Ann Arbor: Adam Richman comes to Tios Mexican Cafe
BY SHARON JACOBS
This week, Ann Arbor is playing host to Adam Richman, host of the Travel Channel series "Man v. Food." Each week on the show, Richman culinarily explores another American town, eating his way to cultural understanding with extreme menu selections and local specialties alike.
Richman’s A2 picks today included Tios Mexican Cafe, where the crew was just finishing up filming at 5 p.m.
“They’re eating ‘Mount Nachismo,’ ” said acting manager Jeremy Seaver in a phone interview with the Daily, “It’s our name for our five-pound plate of nachos.”
After entering the restaurant at around 11 a.m., the "Man v. Food" crew started filming every aspect of the preparation process. The shoot culminated in the consumption of the nachos plate that’s heavier than most textbooks.
“It’s beans, cheese, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives, sour cream, guacamole, queso, tortilla chips, it’s the works,” Seaver said. Impressive!
Assistant manager Eric Sukkar was at the Maize and Blue Delicatessen on Monday when the crew arrived to sample two sandwiches: the “Maize ‘N Blue Awning,” consisting of roast beef, smoked turkey and two kinds of cheese, and the “Triple Play Reuben,” a cultural hodgepodge of corned beef, pastrami and Switzerland Swiss and Jarlsberg cheese.
“(Richman) was a real outgoing guy, he’s a character,” Sukkar said by phone today, “really laid back.”
The Maize and Blue Deli was on national television once before, when Michael Phelps came in for a meal, but "Man v. Food" marks the first time both it and Tios have represented Ann Arbor on TV as must-dine destinations.
Richman and crew also visited A2 mainstay Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger, but managerial staff was not available for comments.
Ann Arbor’s "Man v. Food" episode is scheduled to air Oct. 20 as the Season 3 finale, according to Seaver; Richman will next be found eating in Niagara Falls Wednesday at 9 p.m.
