The No. 15 Michigan men’s golf team can comfortably sleep tonight, as it currently sits in second place at the Windon Memorial Classic.

Fifteen of the nation’s best teams have gathered to face off at the event in Evanston. Tournament rules take the lowest four scores of each team’s five players.

The Wolverines currently sit at 16 above par, behind No. 13 Illinois, who is at 13 above par.

The team is made up of junior Lion Kim, sophomores Matt Thompson and Alex Frankel and freshmen Rahul Bakshi and Jack Schultz.

The Wolverine corps bested the competition in round one, posting a score of 293. Round two was cut early to accommodate for darkness and will continue today.

Thompson currently leads Michigan at three above par entering today's competition.

The squad is currently able to boast 16 birdies through the current round, and 22 bogeys. The Wolverines will have to fight back to make up for the three strokes that separate them from Illinois.

"The conditions were tough and it's a really difficult course," Michigan coach Andy Sapp said. "Our guys really got off to a great start. If we can get a few birdies, we can battle our way closer to Illinois.”

In individual play, Thompson and Schultz are tied for seventh at four over. Kim is six over par and tied for 15th.

The Wolverines will continue their quest for victory today at 8 a.m. CST. Check The Michigan Daily tomorrow, Oct. 6, for full coverage of the event.
