The Michigan hockey team received its annual list of National Letters of Intent yesterday for next year’s freshmen class, but it’s the one player who didn’t sign that’s making more news than those who did sign.
More like this
Top goaltending recruit Jack Campbell — who had made a verbal commitment to Michigan — unexpectedly didn’t commit to the Wolverines, and instead is expected to sign with the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL.
Campbell expressed his excitement about the prospects of becoming a Wolverine last month in an exhibition game for the US National Development Team against Michigan.
"(Michigan fans) want me here and I want to be here, so it should be a great fit," he said. "But they haven’t seen the best of me yet, and hopefully I’ll be able to show them that soon.”
Coincidentally, the Spitfires face off against the Plymouth Whalers tonight, the team that Robbie Czarnik joined yesterday after leaving the Wolverines.
The Wolverines did sign forwards Jacob Fallon and Luke Moffatt and defensemen Mac Bennett, Kevin Clare and Jon Merrill. Bennett is the only player of the five commits that isn’t currently playing for NTDP with Campbell.
