'M' comeback attempt stifled by dominant relief staff

Arizona has never lost this season when it has had a lead after six innings.

The Wildcats did just enough late to defeat Michigan 4-3 at Ray Fisher Stadium Saturday night in the Ann Arbor Regional.

But it didn't come easy.

Sophomore Mike Dufek stepped up to the plate in the eighth inning with junior Zach Putnam standing 120 feet in front of him on second base. The Arizona native belted a grounder down the first baseline, but Arizona first baseman C.J. Ziegler snatched the ball and tagged the base, stranding the tying run on second.

The Wolverines threatened once again in the ninth. But after giving up a single to freshman Ryan LaMarre, Arizona closer Jason Stoffel earned a school record 12th save for the season.

Michigan will play Kentucky tomorrow at 2 p.m. Michigan now must win three win a row to win its own regional.

Junior Chris Fetter earned the loss for Michigan, but it might have been his most impressive outing of the season.

Coming into the night, the most runs he had let up in a single game this season was four. He tied that mark by the third inning.

In the first inning, the Wildcats strung together a series of hits to take an early 3-0 lead.

Michigan coach Rich Maloney never wavered his confidence in his second-team All-American pitcher. Maloney didn't send junior Ben Jenzen to warm up in the bullpen until after Fetter finished five innings on the mound.

Jenzen never entered the game because Fetter pitched all eight innings for his second complete game of the season.

He threw seven strike outs on the night and was hitless in his last two innings - his most dominant of the contest.

After the game Maloney said he would've pitched in the ninth Fetter as long as his ace was comfortable.

Michigan fell behind early with Fetter still trying to find his control, but it had plenty of chances offensively to close the gap.

The Wolverines had a runner on base in each of the first three innings. But Arizona pitcher David Coulon kept the Wolverine runners from ever advancing a runner to third.

It wasn't until junior Jason Christian blasted an RBI triple to center field in the fifth inning that Michigan opened up offensively.

Putnam and LaMarre both hit solo home runs off Arizona's dominant bullpen to pull the game within one.

But in the final innings, Arizona did just enough to stay undefeated when leading after six innings and move onto the championship game of the regional.
