'Lost' episode blogs: 'What Kate Does'

SPOILER WARNING: Like all the “Lost” blog posts, this one contains spoilers. Reading before having watched last night’s episode may cause you to become dislodged from happiness.

I’m going to step out on a limb here and take a position that may turn out to be unpopular. I really enjoyed last night’s episode of “Lost,” more than many parts of the season premiere. Sure, it was lacking in what I deem the most interesting plotline, Smokey and the jets, but it did something that absolutely needed to be done: It made the alternate reality compelling.

We all knew things were different in the other reality, and it appeared some weird stuff was happening, but there was no clear purpose yet. But this episode really made it clear how the alternate reality will help show what is destiny and what is coincidence. Some people come together without the island’s help, some don’t.

Also, we had what I am going to assume is another instance of phasing out (which is my handy dandy shorthand for jumping out of a timeline) in Aaron’s temporary lapse of existence. As the doctor said, he likes to move around. Finally, we may start to see Aaron being special, joining the ranks of Desmond and possibly Christian. Whatever is happening to this world, it can’t be good.

The temple plotline, though, did not offer as much. Sure, we’re starting to find out about “the infection,” but was that really anyone’s biggest unanswered mystery? Sawyer is now off on his own being emo, and Kate is being as annoying as ever. The one great moment for me was the conversation between Jack and Dogen about the pill. With the burden of Juliet’s death and Sayid’s “infection,” along with Kate not being around to make him go all mushy, Jack is finally re-emerging as a worthwhile character.

Oh right, Claire is back, and she got infected and turned into Rousseau. And the temple people seem to know about it. While it’s nice to see Claire again, this isn’t necessarily the answer I was hoping for.

Here’s to a more smoke-filled episode next week.

My star rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

And now, the not-so-pleased peanut gallery:

Chris Koslowski:
The Good: Josh Holloway, Matthew Fox, and newcomer Hiroyuki Sanada (Dogen) turn in solid performances. Dogen's translator is very reminiscent of Dennis Hopper's character in Apocalypse Now.

The Bad: Evangeline Lilly's performance in tonight's episode confirms she's not up to snuff with the other Losties' acting prowess. Alternative timeline took a step towards the improbable when Claire befriends Kate after Kate kidnaps her and steals her baby bag. Now that Juliet's dead, “Lost” really lacks a strong, female character.

The Bottom Line: The worst episode since season four. 2 out of 5 stars.

Brad Sanders:
I wasn't watching “Lost,” I was watching commercials with LOST breaks. The only thing that really happened was Claire's appearance in the last minute of the episode. But at least Mac from “It's Always Sunny” made an appearance!

I'd give the last episode of “Lost” 2 out of 5 stars.

Carolyn Klarecki
It wasn't a great episode, but not as bad as some people are saying. I've missed Claire and it's great that she's back in the spotlight after almost an entire season of unexplained disappearance. The episode could've benefited from a look into what's happening in the Ben, psuedo-Locke, Richard, Frank and Sun plot and I think that's where this season's weakness will be. There are too many story lines to devote time to in each episode and because they're all compelling, I'm always going to be thinking "Great, but what's happening in the alternate timeline/the temple/the foot statue?"

Still, I give this episode 3.5 out of 5 stars
