'Lost' episode blogs: 'The Last Recruit'

BY JAMIE BLOCK

Spoiler Warning: This blog post contains spoilers regarding the most recent episode of 'Lost,' as well as regarding the promo for the following episode, to air an egregiously long two weeks from now. If you want to remain unaware of either of these, don't read this.

As I've written before, this season has been defined by episodes where things happen and episodes where nothing happens. Last night, things happened. But the question is whether any of them are of great consequence.

The camps merged, then split again, then split yet again. Yes, all of these things are technically events, but in the end not much was really accomplished.

Speaking of not accomplishing much, what does Widmore hope to do with explosives against a smoke monster? I mean, really? Really?

The on-island plot is doing a good job, though, of making everyone's motivations exceedingly clear. With Sawyer kicking Jack off the boat and Claire siding with whoever seems to be friendliest, the characters are becoming very well defined.

In the alternate, we see some positives and some negatives. The positives: dialogue. The scene with Sawyer and Kate was incredibly entertaining, and Jack's new dynamic with his son is pretty much the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life.

The negatives: HUME! This man who seemed so dead-set on showing everyone the true reality spent this episode just kinda helping out, but not in a way that lends itself to revelations of inter-dimensional bleeding. Come on, Des!

The next episode looks to be somewhat of a bloodbath. Locke is pissed.

Star Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
