"Lost" episode blogs: "LA X" parts 1 and 2

BY JAMIE BLOCK

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT YET WATCHED THE SEASON PREMIERE OF LOST

“Lost” is most definitely back with a vengeance. Or perhaps two vengeances, seeing as how alternate realities have secured a very real presence on the show. But the purpose of this is still unclear, and it needs to be cleared up soon before the off-island story becomes too boring.

The two plotlines taking place on the Island are both moving along very well. The smoke monster is wreaking havoc, and has been given a motive, even if we don’t fully understand what he means by it yet. And our Losties with the temple gang clearly have a mission in which Sayid is an integral part, but they, too, don’t really know what it is.

The purpose of the non-crash storyline is still completely unclear. Desmond’s disappearance and Christian’s misplacement both seem to indicate that the “new” timeline is not entirely stable, and Juliet’s odd ramblings in the wreckage may be a sign of people bridging the gap, because she seems to know that “it worked.” But why should we care about what happens to these people in what can’t help but feel like a hypothetical context? Until this entire timeline has some sort of clear, established purpose, all the stories that happen therein feel meaningless. Sure, it may be interesting to see how life would have gone with no island in the mix, but does that merit half a television show? I, for one, think not.

The mythology of the island is what needs to be addressed. As the show’s producers acknowledge, this is the season for answers, and the on-Island scenes are the only ones doing any answering. And at least so far, the only question begged by the alternate timeline is “Why?”

But I’m certainly not the only “Lost” fan at the Daily. Here’s what some others thought:

Mike Merar:
While the premiere episode helped to answer some crucial questions, it also, unfortunately, presented just as many new questions. Though surely these new questions will be answered, it left me feeling frustrated and more confused than before the episode began.

David Bos:
The final season has gotten off to a great start with an excellent blend of character development, mythology, and mind blowing "WTF" moments.

Mia Marino:
Although I am intrigued by the new twists with "Locke" being the black smoke monster I feel it is too farfetched to have there be a complete dual reality with whatever is going on at LAX. I am however very interested to see what will come next.

Carolyn Klarecki:
The ending was sort of lame and not all that surprising if you saw the promotional trailer released a couple days ago. There wasn't enough Desmond or Claire to satisfy my tastes and way too much Kate. Still, I'm totally pumped for this season. I just want more!
