LIVE: Michigan hockey looks to avoid being swept at Ohio State

BY MICHAEL FLOREK

We are back at Value City Arena for game two of this weekend series. Michigan came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game last night but ended up falling 5-3 despite out-shooting Ohio State 45-20. Ohio State has gone with rotating a goalie system this season, but it looks like Cal Heeter will take the net for them here in game two.

Michigan's lineup only has one minor change from last night, Pateryn is in tonight for Moffie. Here is the full Wolverine lineup:

Offense

12 Hagelin - 19 Rust - 10 Brown

25 Wohlberg - 29 Caporusso - 21 Treais

16 Winnett - 23 Glendening - 11 Lynch

14 Lebler - 22 Rohrkemper - 3 Vaughan

Defensemen

7 Langlais - 4 Summers

6 Burlon - 2 Pateryn

34 Llewellyn - 5 Kampfer

Goaltender

35 Hogan

Michigan needs this game tonight in the worst way. They are already 11th in the conference and a loss tonight would pretty much take away any hope for finishing at the top of the conference.

We've got about 20 minutes until game time so check back closer to the game for more updates. Right now the jumbotron is telling their crowd how to do the cheers. This is literally what it said, "Fans when a player on the opposing team goes to the penalty box, yell 'oooooooooooooooo' and when the door shuts, go 'C-ya.' Word to your mother." He actually said word to your mother. Too bad Yost doesn't tell our crowd how to do the penalty box cheer, a lot of little kids would figure out some new words.

First Period

20:00 We are about to get started here and the crowd seems bigger than it was last night, but there are about 12 students here, literally. The word on the street is that Ohio State volleyball is playing tonight so they have their priorities straight.

18:11 Michigan got a turnover in the netural zone and Lynch got behind the defense, but the pass was too slow, forcing him to go offside.

17:10 Summers is keeping up with last game, where he took a penalty to start the game. Just to a holding penalty when really didn't need two. Power play Ohio State.

13:52 Hagelin took a missed plass off of the boards and fanned on it. Berenson keeps saying sometimes luck keeps the puck out of the net, this must have been the case there because the net was wide open.

11:55 By the way, Ohio State is wearing their alternate jerseys tonight. They look kind of the like the Red Wings old-school striped jerseys but with gray instead of white.

10:59 Michigan's got a power play and Treais just missed a backdoor opportunity that lead to a slapshot from the tops of the circles the other way. Michigan is outshooting Ohio State 3-1 but the Wolverine defensemen have had to do a lot of work tonight when the teams are even up.

10:10 Better start for the Wolverines tonight, they net a power play goal off of the face-off. Rust won the draw setting off the face-off play, Brown to Kampfer to Summers to the back off the net a wrist shot. 1-0 Michigan

8:55 The Buckeyes just took anbother penalty but got a shorthanded 2-on-1 that forced the Hogan to make a save. Meanwhile the band has generated a weak "HOOOGAN" chant. It was right after he made a huge stop, not exactly the time to tell him he sucks.

7:07 Michigan just had a variety of chances that culminated in Rohrkemper sending what would have been his first career goal off the post.

5:18 Hogan just made a nice stop off a tip and his teammates are having some better defensive zone coverage tonight, clearing out the rebounds and not allowing anybody to be wide open in front, like the Buckeyes were for two of their goals yesterday.

1:57 Llewellyn is getting in to it with Ohio State's Patrick Shafer after the whistle. He should be made, Ohio State's had three minutes of sustained pressure. It doesn't have a lot of shots though which can be attributed to nice defensive play by the Wolverines, not allowing anything into the middle.

0:50 Summers just drilled Albert at the blue line, even the Ohio State crowd apppreciated that hit.

End of the First Period Final shots were 11-7 Michigan, an okay period by both teams. There really wasn't much to differentiate between the two teams other than that goal.

The CCYHA Blue Jackets are playing against each other right now. Brutus is officiating but this time he isn't on skates after his poor performance last night. If you're wondering about the game #15 on the white team scored. The announcer just screamed "denied" after a save. Completely unecessary.

You can text your guess in on the Ohio State zamboni race. I picked number three last night and won. I didn't text it in so I was able to get a prize, but I'm not sure there was a prize. The whole operation seems a little shady to me.

Second Period

20:00 The refs are sweeping some of the excess water to the sides of the ice before we get going. Rust's line will start.

19:35 A bunch of 12-year olds are yelling "Let's go Blue," I am way up in the rafters and can hear these kids, the building is silent right now.

17:21 The band is playing the song that the Michigan band usually plays inbetween the second and third, no one is dancing except for on tuba guy. I wouldn't call it dancing it seems more like all of his muscles had spasms simultaneously. It was just a poor effort all around.

14:43 Michigan is headed to the power play again after Lynch drew an interference penalty. We have played over five minutes and there have been just two shots this period, both for the Wolverines.

13:49 Burlon mishandled the puck on the blue line that lead to a breakaway for the Buckeyes. He followed that up by slashing the player going in. Hogan made the breakaway stop sliding to his left. Four-on-four for about a minute.

12:00 Ohio State's Peter Boyd just had a wide open opportunity on the back door but whiffed. Maybe the luck is turning the Wolverines' way.

10:00 Pretty uneventful period so far, the teams have combined for just six shots. The crowd is doing the O-H-I-O chant right now. It is really their only cheer. They try to switch it up by doing it to music and speeding it up and slowing it down, but really it is all the same. Just a poor effort from the crowd and especially the tiny student section. I had to look to the corner where they are standing to remember they were here.

7:35 Lynch walked out of the corner and had a quick wrist shot but Heeter was up to the challenge. It has been a tough start to the career for Lynch. This is his 16th game and he has just one point. It seems like he has hit the post in everyother game. Eventually some of those have to find their way into the net.

5:56 Ohio State has turned to trapping in their offense zone and it is working, Michigan's defensemen are turning the puck over at the blue line.

3:43 Hogan has solid so far tonight, he just made another stop as Ian Boots let one go from the center of the left circle.

1:11 Brown got hauled for another Ohio State penalty. The crowd is starting to turn against the refs a little bit, the Buckeyes have only gotten two power play opportunities.

0:57 Ohio State just got another one after the whistle. If the Wolverines can score here they can really grab hold of the momentum going into the locker room.

End of the Second Period Shots are 24-13 Michigan and it will have 49 seconds of a five-on-three power play to start the third.

Brutus is taking on Eric to see who can score the most goals from the blue line on a wide open net. Brutus, is...well he's bad. He had four goals on wide open net. Embarrassing. Eric netted seven and took a spill right at the end. The fall was probably the most exciting thing of the whole competition.

Breaking news is just in over the PA system...it is Amber's birthday. No last name just Amber. If you know an Amber and she likes Ohio State hockey, that's probably her.

The Zamboni race is going on right now. I took black because red cannot win two times in a row. Of course black won. I really should bet on this.

There is a hot dog on the jumbotron right now dancing to the YMCA. The only explanation we get from the screen is the words "HOT DOG" flashing over and over. I have one question, why?

Start of Third Period

20:00 Rust's line along with Summers and Kampfer will start the period with a five-on-three.

19:39 Brown took the puck in the slot and took a shot that trickled past Heeter and across the goal mouth to Rust on the backdoor. Rust had all day and fired it into the open net. 2-0 Michigan

18:10 Hogan made another stop off of his glove that went into the air and almost came down behind him. He was able to spot and the puck was cleared away.

16:54 Lynch slid the puck across the goal mouth to Glendening, but the Ohio State defensemen tied up his stick to block what would have been a back-breaking goal.

14:27 Treais just uncorked a slap shot from the right wing Heeter came out on the white ice and made a solid stop. Off of the faceoff Ian Boots picked up the puck and stickhandled around two defensemen only to put it right into Hogans chest.

11:55 Judy Berry won the Buckeye prize pack, one person is clapping.

10:49 Boots just had a wraparound attempt that was snuffed out by Hogan's left pad.

8:00 Brown just got hit from behind by Corey Tory. The refs only gave him a two minute penalty probably because Brown seemed to turn at the last second but Ohio State is killing themselves by taking all of these penalties.

6:41 Brown picked up a penalty as he hit a in the middle of the ice. Apparently no one was watching before the game when they explained the penalty box chant because one guy did it.

2:12 Michigan is playing very conservative, playing a trap but also allowing only one of their forwards to even venture below the tops of the circles. Empty net for OSU.

0:21 Lynch is really snake bitten he was going to go in on a breakaway on the empty net but over skated the puck.

0:08 Ohio State just got one when their defensemen streaked down past the forward, took a pass and buried off of the back bar. 2-1 Michigan

End of the Game: 2-1 Michigan Check back monday for full coverage of this game.
