LIVE BLOG: Michigan Hockey at Lake Superior State
BY TIM ROHAN
After a five hour drive and a lot of rain we have arrive in Sault Ste Marie. Michigan is about to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers in the Wolverines first CCHA game of the season. Michigan was hampered with injuries and illness all week, that held players out of practice. And after Michigan coach Red Berenson called his team "underachieving," he changed up the lines from the previous few games.
Tonight's lines:
Offense (LW/ C / RW)
12 Carl Hagelin / 29 Louie Caporusso / 10 Chris Brown
25 David Wohlberg / 19 Matt Rust / 27 Robbie Czarnik
14 Brin Lebler / 21 A.J. Treais / 16 Ben Winnett
3 Scooter Vaughan / 11 Kevin Lynch / 23 Luke Glendening
Defense
4 Chris Summers / 34 Tristin Llewellyn
7 Chad Langlais / 6 Brandon Burlon
13 Lee Moffie / 5 Steve Kampfer
Goalies
35 Bryan Hogan
30 Patrick Summers
Scratches
-2 Greg Pateryn, 15 Anthony Ciraulo, 20 Eric Elmblad, 22 Jeff Rohrkemper, 31 Shawn Hunwick, 39 Lindsay Sparks
-Winnett is recovering from a pulled groin and Berenson said that the junior was around 90% healthy on Tuesday.
-Starting tonight's game will be Rust's line. Berenson has been starting Rust's line regularly, even though they are listed as the second line.
-Caporusso and Wohlberg each haven't tallied a point yet through four games. We'll see if they can get on track tonight.
-Michigan is currently No. 5 in the polls with an overall record of 2-2. And the Wolverines are coming off a loss at Boston University. After coming from behind a 2-0 deficit (Michigan tied the score at 2-2 with goals from Czarnik and Rust) Hogan misplayed a puck and it cost them the winning goal.
-The Lakers split a weekend series with Ohio State last weekend. And they are 4-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA.
1st Period
16:02 remaining: Michigan has had a few chances early. Caprousso had a shot go off the post, and the Wolverines have had a few sustained attacks. The Lakers haven't had many rushes as of yet, but Hogan is used to going long periods without seeing many shots.
14:07 remaining: The whole arena seems dead, and while there have been a few close calls, no one has scored yet. Neither team has taken a penalty yet, and the Lakers are an impressive 30% on the power pay so far this season.
12:30 remaining: Michigan has outshot the Lakers 7-1 so far, and have clearly dominated possession of the puck. The Lakers haven't had any prolonged period in which they held the puck in Michigan's zone.
10:39 remaining: Scooter Vaughan just scored a goal on a nice cross ice pass from Glendening. Vaughan had the whole backside of the net to work with as the goalie was out of position on the nice pass from Glendening. Lynch also got an assist on the play, and Michigan was moving the puck great. Scooter had a wide open net from the left low slot. And he cashed in. And immediately after the goal was scored the fire alarm has gone off here in the arena. No one is too afraid of the potential fire that could be ablaze somewhere in the building. But play is stopped right now to correct the issue. My fellow hockey-writer Mike Florek suggested that Scooter's goal was so hot it set off the alarms. score:Michigan 1-0
9:30 remaining: Hagelin just scored on a rebound off a shot from Chris Brown. Brown fired a shot from center of the ice low slot, and the goalie deflected it right to Hagelin who was off to the left side of the goal. Hagelin slapped it into the corner of the net past the goalie for the goal. Michigan has now outshot the Lakers 12-2. The fire alarms did go on again for a few seconds after Hagelin's goal. And went off temporarily before another brief sound. Something must be wrong with the system, but the Wolverines are on fire. Brown now has 4 points on the season. And that was his first point since Michigan's second game against Alaska-Anchorage. Hagelin also scored his 4th point of the season on the play. He leads the team with 3 goals. Score:Michigan 2-0
5:00 remaining: Summers was called for crosschecking and the Lakers failed to get off a single shot in the power play. Hogan has only had to make 3 saves on the day. He has a 2.01 goals against average and has made just 19.25 saves per game.
3:44 remaining: Caporusso just scored his first goal of the season off a rebound off a shot from Hagelin. Moffie was also credited an assist on the play. His teammates gathered around him and congratulated him on his first goal, and point, of the season. The route is on. score: Michigan 3-0
1:46 remaining: A freak play here as the period winds down. Hogan just stopped a great scoring chance for the Lakers and the red light even went on behind the goal. But Hogan stopped him stone cold when the Lakers' player had a wide open look off of a rebound. But Hogan made the save. Then Glendening's stick went flying into the stands here where the arena's glass in the neutral zone is pretty low. Michigan is now on the penalty kill for again having too many men on the ice. 2 of the 3 goals Boston scored last weekend were off of too many men on the ice penalties.
Notes: Michigan outshot the Lakers 15-8 and Hogan had to make one spectacular save to preserve the shut-out. And most of the Lakers' shots came towards the end of the period. And Caporusso lit the lamp for the first time this season. Caporusso's new line of him, Hagelin and Brown has a combined 4 points in the first period.
2nd Period
19:00 remaining: Michigan started the period with 18 seconds on the penalty kill. And now return to full strength.
17:00 remaining The Wolverines are now on the power play because of slashing.
15:00 remaining: A Lakers player just saved a goal as the puck was sliding past the goalie on his right side but Steven Kaunisto had his stick there to stop the puck as the Wolverines power play ended.
9:00 remaining: Not much action this period. Michigan has had its chances and the Lakers have squandered the few that they have had. The Wolverines aren't completely shutting down their offensive attack, but they certainly have taken less shots.
6:55 remaining: Wohlberg was handling the puck on his knees in the right low slot. He slid towards the goal and shot, and Rust was there for a rebound. Kampfer and Wohlberg were given assists on the play and it was Wohlberg's first points of the season. score: Michigan 4-0
3:27 remaining: Summers picks up a penalty and Michigan is now on the penalty kill again.
Notes: Michigan is now winning 4-0 and has outshot the Lakers 25-14, including 10-6 in the second period. The Wolverines penalty kill has stifled opponents this season and Michigan's only two goals allowed, on the penalty kill, came at Boston. Michigan will start the third period on the power play.
3rd Period
19:55 remaining: Michigan is on the power play to start the period.
18:35 remaining: The Wolverines are now playing 4 on 3. As a Laker and a Wohlberg picked up penalties. Hagelin had a goal that was just rescinded because of a penalty called on himself. Hagelin lifted the Lakers player's stick and he fell down. Michigan is now playing 3 on 3.
17:18 remaining: Michigan was playing 3 on 5 when the Lakers scored a power play goal when they had a player located on the backside that was open off of quick passing. The goal was under review and upheld. score: Michigan 4-1
13:00 remaining: Michigan is on the penalty kill again as Summers was called for a penalty.
11:18 remaining:Hagelin has been hustling all night. And Moffie almost had a wicked hard slap shot from the high slot. But now Moffie was called for a penalty and Michigan is once again on the penalty kill. He was called for interference.
8:26 remaining: Hagelin just carried the puck down the ice and almost had a wrap-around goal. The guy is fast. Michigan has kept up the intensity, but they are being outshot 4-7 this period.
6:51 remaining:Brown was called for a penalty as the Lakers player seemed to fall down on his own in the Wolverines attacking zone. Michigan is once again on the penalty kill, but they are still continuing to be outshot by the Lakers this period.
3:30 remaining: I'm going to sign off now. Michigan is winning 5-1 with about 3:30 left. Glendening just scored. Check the blog again tomorrow for another live blog from Sault Ste Marie.
score: Michigan 5-1
