1 Tornadoes
"Bustin'
Surfboards"
More like this
It's straight from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and into your car as you speed down the road in the sun. Even if you never make it to the beach, this is classic waterfront fare.
2 Sublime
"Scarlet
Begonias"
Penned by chill-out master Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and performed by a summer band if there ever was one, this track is a bouncy, reggae-like version of a great song.
3 America
"Ventura
Highway"
This could be your parents' band, but it doesn't have to be. There's no denying the cool wanderlust of this song. And you probably already know the guitar riff: Now you just won't be able to forget it.
4 The Coral
"In the
Morning"
A newer band that instantly sounds like sunlight and open air. The bell-like xylophone notes spice up a cool, folky groove.
5 Caetano Veloso
"Luz Do Sol"
If you're going to download this track by Brazilian pop heavyweight Veloso, get it from the 1986 version of his self-titled album. His voice soars over a sparse, summery guitar line in this simple rendition. Perfect to chill to.
6 The Kinks
"Everybody's Gonna
Be Happy"
When was the last time hand claps were this effective in a song? A growly, still-hip classic to get you to wherever you're headed.
7 Led Zeppelin
"D'yer Maker"
Led Zep tried everything at least once, even island-inspired beats. Until you hear Robert Plant's signature yowl, you might not even think it was Zeppelin. A less-known treasure in the band's catalogue.
8 Wilco
"California Stars"
A slower, end-of-a-long-hot-day track to listen to at dusk. The mere mention of California and her constellations will have you dreaming of the coast in no time.
9 Beulah
"What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades?
All good things must come to an end, and summer is no exception. Beulah's frontman Miles Kurosky has a salty, plaintive voice that is perfect for a wind-down like this. It's been a fun ride.
10 The Avalanches
"Cornerstone Mix"
In case I missed anything, this 20 minute mix is made from dozens of summery staples melded into one winding trip. This surfside magic will take you the rest of the season to sort though.
