In light of Rosh Hashana, 'U' clarifies attendance policy
BY NICOLE ABER
With the start of Rosh Hashana Wednesday night, students celebrating the Jewish holiday may be concerned about attendance repercussions if they intend on missing classes. But in accordance with University policy to excuse students from class due to religious observance, professors will be making exceptions this week though it is the first week of the semester.
In an e-mail sent out to LSA students late last week, the Newnan LSA Advising Center reiterated the University's attendance policy for religious observance and encouraged students to let their professors know in advance if they plan to miss class this week.
“Students who know they will miss a class meeting because of a religious observance are responsible for notifying their instructors ahead of time to see what arrangements can be made for any missed work,” the e-mail states. “This is especially important during the first week of class, when instructors need to finalize their class rolls and determine whether or not to issue any class permissions or overrides.”
University of Michigan Hillel also sent an e-mail to students earlier this week telling them about the policy.
