Letter calling to cut Promise Scholarship bears Mary Sue Coleman's name
BY JILLIAN BERMAN
A letter sent to Michigan lawmakers by Business Leaders for Michigan asking them to eliminate the Michigan Promise Scholarship includes the name of University President Mary Sue Coleman, according to an article in The Detroit Free Press.
The letter, written by Business Leaders for Michigan Chief Executive Officer, Doug Rothwell, also bears the names of Wayne State University President Jay Noren, Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon and Oakland University President Gary Russi, according to the article.
Though Coleman's name is on the letterhead, she didn't sign the letter, which also asks lawmakers to reduce the state's business tax and not to increase overall taxes, according to the article.
Though there's no comment from University officials in the story, MSU spokesman Terry Denbow told the Free Press “Being on a letterhead should not imply endorsement.” Noren also told the Free Press he is opposed to tax cuts.
