Legendary musician Alex Chilton dies at 59

BY MIKE KUNTZ

Alex Chilton, the legendary Big Star and Box Tops frontman who was immortalized in the Replacements song bearing his name, passed away yesterday in a New Orleans hospital from a heart attack. He was 59.

When thinking of the current musical landscape, indie or otherwise, it’s easy to overlook the true pioneers. Big Star, the iconic powerpoppers who never really got their due, have been perhaps the single most influential band in inspiring bands of the indie rock, college rock, and powerpop persuasion. And though their music might be most recognized as the theme song to “That 70s Show” (#1 Record’s “In The Street”), Big Star’s mark can be readily seen in bands like R.E.M., Wilco, The Jayhawks and countless others.

Chilton’s death comes at the eve of Big Star’s much-anticipated reunion appearance at Austin’s SXSW festival this week. He will be greatly missed.

Below are some songs to play in his memory. Rest in peace, Alex.

Big Star – September Gurls
