LaMarre named First Team All-Big Ten, six other Wolverines honored

BY BEN ESTES

Though he was out earlier in the season for five weeks with a broken thumb, junior outfielder Ryan LaMarre returned to the Michigan lineup just in time to lay waste to the Big Ten.

And he was recognized by the conference Monday, becoming the only Wolverine named to the All-Big Ten First Team. The Jackson native, who was on the Second Team last season, leads the team in batting at .409 and slugging at .659, to go along with five homers and 35 RBI in just 132 at-bats.

Michigan placed two more players on the Second Team, senior catcher Chris Berset and junior closer Tyler Burgoon. Berset, who was recently named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, has exploded in his senior season, becoming a force offensively and defensively. The co-captain was also named Michigan's Sportsmanship Award Honoree.

Rounding out the Wolverine representation are senior right-hander Alan Oaks, who was named All-Big Ten Third Team, and a trio named to the All-Freshman Team: centerfielder Patrick Biondi, shortstop Derek Dennis, and left-handed starter Bobby Brosnahan.

The Big Ten Tournament begins Wednesday in Columbus. Michigan, having received a bye, will play its first game Thursday.
