Jung Makes first round exit In NCAAs

BY MATT KRASNOFF

The singles portion of tennis season is officially over for junior Jason Jung.

Jung — the No. 38 singles player in the country — lost 6-3, 6-2 to No. 11 Michael Shabaz from Virginia. Shabaz spent most of the season playing number-one singles for Virginia, the number-one team in the country coming into the tournament.

Jung was invited to play in the NCAA Individual Championships along with freshman Evan King. The two went to Georgia after the team lost in the second round of NCAA competition to No. 4 Ohio State.

Jung was 21-16 in singles this season for the No. 26 Wolverines. He spent much of the season in the second singles position, behind his doubles partner — King.

The two will have one more shot to keep their season alive when the doubles tournament begins tomorrow. The No. 31 ranked pair will take on No. 17 Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia from Texas Tech. The time of the match has not yet been determined.

Jung and King were 14-7 this season, alternating between the first and second positions.

King is the highest rated Wolverine recruit to ever play for the men’s tennis program, and Jung was voted the team’s Most Improved Player.

Together they will look for Michigan’s first ever doubles title.
