Jackson, King, Rose to take part in Legends Classic ceremony

BY LUKE PASCH

On Sunday afternoon, the Michigan men’s basketball team will tip off against a visiting Gardner-Webb in game two of the Legends Classic. As part of the tournament ceremonies, the Wolverines will honor a trio of its basketball greats in front of the home crowd.

Ray Jackson, Jimmy King and Jalen Rose, who all started together in their freshmen season (1991-92), will take the court to be saluted by fans at halftime. The three were part of the first all-freshman starting five — dubbed the “Fab Five” — to take the floor in an NCAA championship game in Division-I men’s basketball history, where they lost to Duke

The following year, they lost to North Carolina in the championship game after one of the most infamous college basketball blunders in history, when fellow freshman Chris Webber tried calling a timeout with 11 seconds to go in the game when the Wolverines didn’t have any timeouts left. This resulted in a technical foul, clinching the game for the Tarheels.

During their careers at Michigan, Jackson received two All-Big Ten honors, while King and Rose each received three. Rose — a Detroit native — was also a two-time All-American during his tenure and finished with the eighth-most points in program history after just three seasons (1,788 points). King is 17th (1,542) and Jackson is 29th (1,262) on that list.
