Inspection reports: Ambassador Bridge needs work

DEARBORN, Mich. — The two most recent annual inspection reports on the Ambassador Bridge found that the 80-year-old international span was structurally sound but in need of maintenance and repair.

Democratic U.S. Rep. John Dingell on Thursday released copies of a summary of a 2007 inspection report to the media that described the bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario as "in overall fair condition."

A copy of a 2008 report reviewed by The Associated Press described the bridge the same way.

The Federal Highway Administration released the 2007 report to Dingell last month under the Freedom of Information Act. A federal judge on Tuesday denied a request by the bridge's owner to keep the report secret.

The Detroit International Bridge Co. says the bridge is safe for public use.
