For the second time this season, a member of the Michigan men's track and field team broke a school record.

Adam Harris broke the 60-meter dash record in the season opener. This weekend, at the Akron Open, sophomore Frank Shotwell, who finished the heptathlon with 5,525 points, giving him first place and a new Michigan record. The previous indoor record of 5,308 was set by Sean Clancy in 1995.

"The highlight of the meet was Frank Shotwell," Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said.

The heptathlon is a seven-event competition that tests an athlete's prowess both on the track and in the field. The events include distance events like the 1,000-meter run, sprints like the 60-meter dash, and field events like pole vaulting. Shotwell finished in the top three of all seven events, including his first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.21).

Shotwell wasn't the only Wolverine to have a successful weekend.

Harris continued his outstanding season, winning his third 200-meter dash. His final time of 21.25 seconds also qualified as an NCAA provisional time.

Junior co-captain Lex Williams earned an NCAA provisional time as well, running the mile in 4:01.74.

Two factors contributed to the Wolverines' success this past weekend. Some of the starters, including Harris and Williams, sat out from some events last weekend at the Red Simmons/Jack Harvey Invitational to rest for the Akron Open. This weekend's meet marked the first time the team competed at a 300-meter track, which can yield faster times than a typical indoor track.

"It gives you a chance to run faster," Warhurst said. "So two weeks in a row, we should be getting some good times."

The Wolverines will also compete on a 300-meter track at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend next weekend. With that in mind, they hope to continue their record-breaking ways.
