Hagelin, Merrill pick up CCHA players of the week honors

BY CASANDRA PAGNI

After sweeping Alaska-Fairbanks at home this past weekend, the No. 6 Michigan hockey team moved into first place in the CCHA, thanks to timely scoring by a variety of players and two solid performances by senior netminder Shawn Hunwick.

Two Wolverines — senior forward Carl Hagelin and freshman defenseman Jon Merrill — earned CCHA player of the week honors for their individual efforts in the series sweep.

Hagelin leads the team in both goals and points and earned CCHA offensive player of the week accolades. The captain has 13 goals and 22 assists for Michigan this season and is currently on a nine-game point streak. Hagelin assisted on five of the Wolverines’ six weekend goals against the Nanooks and had a plus-four rating.

Merrill was the CCHA rookie of the week for his two goals against Alaska. Merrill scored in both Friday and Saturday night’s victories, including less than two minutes into Saturday’s matchup.
