The University's Career Center website, www.careercenter.umich.edu, hosts an array of online tools that help students find job opportunities, hone their professional persona and manage their work records.
If you're starting at square one, a good first step is taking a career compatibility test. The Career Center offers the Myers-Brigg Type Indicator, a survey based on the theories of psychologist Carl Jung that identifies a person's personality type and career potential based on his or her answers. The Career Center charges a $15 fee to assess to the test, but you can find it for free through a Google search.
After you see your results, you can instant message one of the Career Center counselors listed in the website's screen name directory. For example, CareerAmy coordinates internship services and has advice for pre-law students.
So now that you've settled on a potential career, get yourself a job by perusing the website's lists of employers seeking interns and full-time hires. You'll want to keep track of your progress on the website's job search checklist to hunt most efficiently. For some inspiration, read the alumni profiles for accounts of how others scored your dream position in the past.
Once you find a job posting you like, you should be able to apply online, but first you need to compose something to send them. This means creating a resum
