Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff held tryouts for the Michigan football team at 6 a.m. today in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The tryout, which lasted an hour and a half, attracted 28 athletes with talent ranging from walk-ons who participated in last year's extended tryout to students with no football experience.
The tryout included footwork drills, passing drills and timed 40-yard runs. Compared to last February's open tryout, which drew 65 athletes, the atmosphere of the early-morning workout was much more subdued. Rodriguez said there was a disappointing number of "big guys" who came out for the team but was pleased with the talent and number of wide receivers.
In February, Ryan Sheridan, Jacob Stoll and Marcos Esparza were invited to return for further evaluation after the open tryout. After not making the fall roster, all three returned to participate in this morning's tryout. Rodriguez discussed the progress of last semester's walk-ons, mentioning cornerback Tony Anderson as a player who has made significant progress since making the fall roster.
Rodriguez said the coaches would invite a few of today's athletes to participate in an extended tryout. He did not rule out the prospect of a walk-on from today's tryout possibly dressing in a game before the end of the year.
