After a promising two rounds to open the Wolverine Invitational, the Michigan women's golf team was unable to keep up the pace in Sunday's final round, ultimately falling to fourth place in a frustrating conclusion that stunned the team. The Wolverines' 69-over-par 921 was 17 shots behind tournament champion Notre Dame.

Michigan led the tournament after the first two rounds on Saturday, shooting 295 and 303 to gain a two-stroke lead over the Fighting Irish. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, a 323 on Sunday left them 39 shots over par for the day to Notre Dame's 20-over-par 304.

Although the fourth-place finish was an improvement over last week's result - 11th place in the Lady Northern Invitational - the Wolverines knew that they let a victory slip away.

"I am extremely disappointed in our performance," senior co-captain Lindsay Davis said. "It was our home course and we came up short. We're going to have to work harder." Added Coach Kathy Teichert: "We were feeling great about yesterday. but today was, from top to bottom, a disappointing day. We struggled from the start and the momentum never changed and it was a very difficult day for all of the players. It was disheartening."

No Michigan golfer shot a round higher than nine over par in the first two rounds. The five players combined for six rounds of four-over or better. On Sunday, however, the lowest individual round was Davis' eight-over 79. Despite the disappointing third round, Coach Teichert says her team can learn from the loss.

"It's hard to regroup when your shots aren't going in," Teichert said. "But it's a good learning experience. Four out of our five players are pretty inexperienced golfers and we've got a lot to learn. This is the only way we're going to get better."
