Whenever I see someone with one of those nylon bags with leather handles crossing the Diag or walking down S. University, I cringe a bit. Yes, those bags are waterproof and can hold up to Michigan weather, and yes, they’re roomy and can carry a ton of stuff, but they aren’t very attractive. You don’t have to sacrifice style for function. The next time you’re out shopping for a new bag, consider the following.
Hickoree’s Canvas Mason Bag, $79 at www.hickorees.com
It’s a tool bag, but all the better. With dimensions of 16”W x 14”H x 6”D, a leather bottom, and heavy-duty, water repellant, canvas sides, this bag can hold its own against Michigan’s rain and snow and can easily handle anything you throw at it, be it textbooks or art supplies.
Heritage Cross-Body Hobo, $198 at www.bananarepublic.com
A very simple and clean bag. Constructed of leather and cream-colored suede, this is a great bag to carry around during the warmer weather that lies ahead. While suede usually holds up to wet weather, you may want to be careful with this bag when it’s raining or snowing a lot. Measuring 17"W x 15"H x 2”D, this cross-body hobo isn’t as big as Hickoree’s Canvas Mason Bag, but it’s still big enough to hold everything you need for class.
