Ex-Wolverine Rumeal Robinson sentenced to 6.5 years in prison

BY CHANTEL JENNINGS

Rumeal Robinson, famous for hitting the two overtime freethrows against Seton Hall in the 1989 National Championship game, was sentenced to 6.5 years in federal prison yesterday.

Robinson was found guilty in September on 11 counts, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He had received loans from a bank in Iowa claiming he was investing in a development project in Jamaica, but federal prosecutors said he actually bought a condominium and plasma televisions.

Robinson has been ordered to pay restitution of $642,929.02 to the Community State Bank in Ankeny, Iowa and was sentenced to five years of supervised release upon his prison release.

In 1989 he left Michigan for the National Basketball Association after his sophomore season and signed a $4.29 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks in 1990.
