In Erika’s Experience: Stay until the clock reads 00:00
BY ERIKA MAYER
Last Saturday, I stood in amazement as students filed past me out of Michigan Stadium during the third quarter. There were more students lined up to leave the section than there are during halftime. I’d expect that behavior from the parents and alumni, but not from the student section. By the end of the third quarter, the student section was visibly emptying.
It’s not acceptable to leave the stadium while there is still time on the clock. To all of those who left in the third quarter – you missed Tate Forcier’s touchdown, and it was a good one. You missed the part where we almost made up the points. Yes, we lost the game and there were some painful moments, but as a University student, you should stay in your seat until the clock runs out.
No matter how many dropped passes or interceptions, no matter how many missed blocks and broken lines, when the football players turn to the student section it should be full. Even if the rest of the stadium is empty, we stay. It’s part of what makes us a great team and a great school. Our slogan is “the leaders and the best” not “the leavers and the fair-weather fans.” If you want to cheer on the team only when we win, you should think about transferring to Ohio State University. We don’t have room for that kind of bad sportsmanship here.
