Crime Alert: Armed robbery near Oxford and Hill

BY KYLE SWANSON

A man was robbed at gunpoint early this morning near Hill Street on the 700 block of Oxford Road, according to a Crime Alert from the University’s Department of Public Safety.

The alert — the first of the 2011 calendar year — was sent to members of the University community this morning. It described the 3:30 a.m. incident as an armed robbery that occurred as a man was exiting a taxi cab and was approached by another man with a handgun. DPS reported that the suspect stole the victim’s wallet, cell phone and laptop.

The suspect — described as a 5’9” black male who was last seen wearing glasses, a tan knit cap and a large, puffy coat — then fled the seen in a silver, 1990’s-model, four-door sedan.

Lt. Renee Bush of the Ann Arbor Police Department said later this morning that the case is actively under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact DPS or the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Officials at DPS encourage students to be aware of their surroundings and to take necessary precautions when in a potentially compromising situation.
