Chief Justice Roberts's spokesperson confirms he will attend Notre Dame game
BY JACOB SMILOVITZ
In a blog post referencing the Daily's article from today about how the University went about getting Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to visit the Law School this weekend, Wall Street Journal Law Blog writer Ashby Jones confirms that Roberts will indeed be attending the game.
Jones writes that Kathy Arberg, a spokeswoman for the Supreme Court has "confirmed that the Chief Justice was attending the game on Saturday, but declined to say who he was pulling for."
Arberg went on, saying "that Michigan’s invitation 'wasn’t hurt' by the fact that Jeffrey Minear, the Chief Justice’s 'counselor,' is a U of M law school alum."
Jones writes that Arberg elaborated further: “The counselor to the Chief Justice serves as the chief of staff, helping the Chief Justice administer the Court and the judiciary, as well as serving as the Chief Justice’s liaison to other government agencies.”
Also, according to a report in the Winter 2008-09 Notre Dame Magazine, John Roberts attended last year's Notre Dame-Michigan game in South Bend.
The article says that "Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court has been a Fighting Irish football fan since his childhood in northern Indiana."
It continues: "so it was little surprise that he enhanced his one-day tenure as the John J. Clynes Visiting Chair in the Notre Dame Law School by dropping by a football practice and attending the September 13 win over Michigan."
So when you're at the Big House on Saturday, take a look around during that third quarter lull and see if you just happen to see the chief justice of the nation's highest court.
