Cagers will be tested by Central's hot hand

The Michigan women's basketball team lost 23 games last season to 16 different teams.

But the Wolverines have a chance to get revenge upon at least 14 of them this season.

They already avenged last season's loss to Toledo with a 44-41 road victory last Wednesday.

Michigan's next opportunity at redemption comes tonight when it travels to Mount Pleasant to take on Central Michigan at 7 p.m.

The Chippewas romped the Wolverines last year, 79-57 in what was arguably the season's low point.

Central Michigan reserve guard Angela Chan torched Michigan for 19 points on 6-for-8 shooting, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

"I never in a million years dreamed that this would happen," Michigan coach Cheryl Burnett said after the devastating loss.

The Chippewas shot an outstanding 7-for-11 from behind the line that game.

Central Michigan is shooting a solid .375 from long range this year, well above the .284 clip Michigan has allowed thus far.

Adding insult to the injury of Central Michigan's hot shooting, Michigan went just 3-for-19 from behind the arc against a Chippewa zone defense last season.

But the Michigan players barely remember the loss. They aren't dwelling on the past and just want to focus on tonight. And their short memory will help achieve the goal, sophomore point guard Jessica Minnfield said.

"We always come in with a new mindset," Minnfield said.

But even without revenge as a motivation, the Wolverines have much to play for beyond their record.

"We just want to be the best team in Michigan," sophomore forward Melinda Queen said.

Michigan beat Detroit last week, leaving tonight's game and a Jan. 18 matchup versus Michigan State as the only remaining contests with in-state teams.

A win tonight would guarantee a winning intra-state record, but to be considered the state's best team, the Wolverines would need to win over the 20th-ranked Spartans.

But for now, with a focus-on-today attitude, the Wolverines must face the challenge in front of them and prove that they're better than the state's Mid-American Conference teams.

Something they haven't done yet.
