After an intense week of anaerobic training, which builds muscle mass, senior Justine Mueller should have been running on empty.

But once she jumped in the pool Friday at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, she pooled her remaining energy and grabbed three individual victories to lead No. 11 Michigan to a 167-131 victory over Ohio State (1-2 Big Ten, 6-5 overall).

The Monroe native swept the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races. She muscled through the 200-yard breaststroke and posted an NCAA consideration time.

"Justine looked really strong in the water," Michigan coach Jim Richardson said. "She doesn't have a lot of quickness now, but she's getting tremendous distance per stroke."

Mueller's most impressive showing was in the 200-yard individual medley. After battling with the Buckeyes' Linda Kristiansen for the first two strokes, Mueller hammered her way through the breaststroke and freestyle portions to finish four seconds ahead of Kristiansen with another NCAA consideration time (2:03).

"She's a great competitor, and she'll step up when she needs to," junior Emily Brunemann said. "She's always had that edge, and I think she's going to do really well at the end of the year."

The Wolverines (4-0, 6-1) hit the wall first in 12-of-14 swimming events in their final dual meet of the season. For the 13th time in Richardson's 23 years, Michigan went undefeated in Big Ten duals.

Brunemann continued to establish herself as one of the top distance swimmers in the conference.

She won multiple races and blew out the competition in 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall 20 seconds ahead of the pack.

With those extra seconds, Brunemann was able to take a short break before she hopped back on the diving blocks for the 200-yard freestyle. The junior delivered a third-place finish in the second of the two back-to-back events, and also won the 500-yard freestyle.

"It was just a matter of not worrying about how tired I was," Brunemann said. "I just had to step up to the next event and look at it as a whole new event."

Junior Hannah Smith posted an NCAA consideration time in the 200-yard backstroke. Smith also notched a victory in the 100-yard backstroke and led Michigan's top relay teams.

But despite the dual meet success, Richardson says he puts little stock into the weekend events. With the championship season looming, the Wolverines are focused on strength and training.

The Wolverines will return to Columbus for the Big Ten Championships Feb. 20-23.

"If we give up a little bit in the meets on Friday, and we gain back a lot more in three weeks - it's worth it," Richardson said.
