'The Big Chill in the Big House' hockey game officially announced

BY MICHAEL FLOREK

After reports broke out yesterday about the final details being put into place, the Michigan and Michigan State athletic departments offically announced that the Wolverines and Spartans will square off in a hockey game played in Michigan Stadium on December 11, 2010.

Deemed "The Big Chill in the Big House," the game will come nine years after their original outdoor matchup. The original game, called the "Cold War," started the current trend of outdoor hockey games. 74,544 watched the two teams battle to a 3-3 tie in the 2001 contest. The game still holds the attendence record for any hockey game.

The rink will be constructed in the middle of Michigan stadium with the red line running directly on top of the 50 yard line.

"It's going to be a great game for both programs, and the state of Michigan, the universities, college hockey, anyway you want to cut it," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "This game will be noted worldwide."
