Across The Nation: SEC Showdowns

No. 1 Florida at No. 4 LSU

As if there wasn’t enough reason to hate the Gators already.

With the two BCS Championships in four years, the Paris Hilton-style paparazzi following senior quarterback Tim Tebow and Tebow's now-famous speech after losing to Mississippi last season — there are countless reasons to dislike Florida.

On top of that, during the National Championship telecast last year, broadcaster Thom Brennaman uttered the infamous words that could wrap-up the past 3 years of "Tebow-Mania."

“If you’re fortunate enough to spend five minutes or 20 minutes around Tim Tebow,” Brennaman said, “your life is better for it.”

Here’s a bucket. You can hurl now.

After last season, Meyer found it appropriate to forever memorialize Tebow's speech while the Golden Boy himself still walks about campus. The plaque, entitled “The Promise,” rests just outside the team’s football facility.

But when the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback suffered a concussion two Saturdays ago during Florida's game against Kentucky, ESPN camera crews trailed the ambulance that brought Tebow to the hospital, rivaling the coverage of a presidential motorcade.

An Alabama newspaper, The Birmingham News, reported yesterday that “even when injured, Tim Tebow draws awareness to a cause.” The newspaper cites Dr. Larry Lemak, who said, “You never want to see a player get hurt, but this has brought concussion awareness to the Southeastern Conference.”

Really?

Now, with Tebow listed as a game-time decision for tomorrow, the top-ranked Gators (4-0) face their biggest test of the year, at No. 4 Louisiana State.

But is there really any doubt that Tebow will fight through his concussion to face the Tiger defense, ranked 16th in the nation in points allowed?

If Tebow spends more time with his head in a bucket on the sidelines than he does tossing touchdowns, his legend is sure to grow in one of the biggest matchups of the year.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Tebows, er, I mean...footballs.

No. 3 Alabama at No. 20 Mississippi

Despite looking underwhelming through most of its four games, No. 20 Mississippi remains a highly regarded SEC team. After climbing as high as No. 4 in the polls, the Rebels (3-1) were upset two weeks ago by South Carolina.

Unnecessary preseason rankings and conference reputation have kept the Rebels in the top 25.

Heralded junior quarterback and NFL draft prospect Jevan Snead will need to bounce out of his current slump (completing just 51.4% of his passes this season) to give the team a chance against another SEC darling, No. 3 Alabama (5-0).

The only guarantee in this matchup, regardless of the outcome: It will serve as proof to every national pundit that the SEC has overwhelming depth.

Ranking: 3 out of 5 footballs

Wisconsin at No. 9 Ohio State

Despite their 5-0 record, the Badgers still remain unranked and unrecognized by the national media.

After stumbling out of the gate with tight victories over inferior competition, Wisconsin needs a signature win against the Buckeyes (4-1) to be considered a legitimate Big Ten contender.

In a game that matches up the best running back in the conference -- Wisconsin sophomore John Clay -- against an Ohio State defensive line that is among the best in the country, expect a closer-than-anticipated game, even if it is at the Horseshoe.

This game is Ohio State’s toughest game until they finish the season at No. 14 Penn State, versus No. 12 Iowa and at Michigan.

Ranking: 3 out of 5 footballs
