EAST LANSING — Before tonight, no current Michigan hockey player knew what it felt like to win at Michigan State.

And in his last chance as a Wolverine, senior forward Travis Turnbull posted a hat trick to beat the Spartans 5-3.
Turnbull scored twice on the power play in the second period within a minute to rally No. 14 Michigan (7-5 CCHA, 11-7 overall) back from down 1-0. The Spartans went ahead with two quick goals to open the third period, but the Wolverines responded with three goals (including a Turnbull empty netter) in the game’s final three minutes to seal their first sweep since playing Ohio State at the end of October.
Sophomore forward Carl Hagelin notched the game-tying score off a feed from freshman defenseman Brandon Burlon on a 2-on-1. Fifty-three seconds later, sophomore forward Louie Caporusso found the back of the net from the right circle to give Michigan an insurmountable 4-3 lead.
For the first time this year, the Wolverines had the same starter between the pipes. Sophomore goalie Bryan Hogan got the nod over senior Billy Sauer Friday, letting up just one first-period goal, and after the game was chosen by Michigan coach Red Berenson to start Saturday. Hogan saved 24 shots Saturday in his eighth win of the year.
The first period was the complete opposite of Friday’s intense opening frame. In the series-opening game, there were 41 penalty minutes called, mostly because of the handful of after-the-whistle scuffles. Saturday, the period lasted 20 fewer minutes with just six penalty minutes handed out in a relatively lackluster frame.
Michigan boasted a 16-9 lead in shots for the period, but nearly went into the break down a score. With just under three minutes to play, a Spartan forward broke away unguarded from behind the net and wristed a shot a few feet from the left crease. Hogan deflected the puck with his chest, but it ricocheted to the right inside post before Hogan was able to cover the puck and keep the game scoreless.
Nearly halfway through the second, the rivalry’s intensity reared its head again with a couple offsetting penalties for roughing after the whistle. Sophomore Tristin Llewellyn and a Spartan skater exchanged blows after falling to the ice.
But Llewellyn was also called for contact to the head (elbowing), giving Michigan State what would end up being a costly power play. The Spartans scored just 15 seconds into the man advantage off of alternate captain Jeff Petry’s wrist shot from the slot. Hogan stopped the puck initially, but it deflected off his chest and into the back of the net.
With just under five minutes remaining in the frame, Michigan earned a great opportunity to tie the contest with 41 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage. While the Wolverines were unable to capitalize on two of those chances Friday, they needed just six seconds to make it a 1-1 game, and another 50 for senior forward to score his second goal within a minute and give Michigan a 2-1 lead.
Turnbull’s first score broke a 0-for-17 power-play drought. Michigan hadn’t scored since its series at Miami, five-game span. The senior’s second goal — his third of the year — came on a poke-in from behind the net past Michigan State goalie Jeff Lerg’s left skate while waiting for a whistle.
But at the beginning of the final period, the Spartans scored a pair of goals of their own within a minute to take a 3-2 lead. Michigan State forward Dustin Gazley slammed home a rebound to tie the contest. And 30 seconds later, Gazley got on the board again after finishing on a beautiful 2-on-1 pass from forward Andrew Rowe.
But the Wolverines rallied again to pull out the victory with, once again, two scores within a minute. Freshman defenseman Brandon Burlon took the puck up the left ice and crossed the puck to sophomore forward Carl Hagelin to finish the play after his initial pass attempt was bloked in the 2-on-1. Just under a minute later, sophomore forward Louie Caporusso wristed a shot past Lerg from the right circle to give Michigan a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Turnbull sealed the victory with an empty netter to complete his hat trick.
