The Michigan Daily Top 10 Poll

BY DAILY STAFF

Published November 23, 2008

The Michigan Daily Top 10 returns for its 13th installment this season. Each week, Daily staffers will fill out ballots, with first place votes receiving 10 points, second-place votes receiving nine, and so on. The results are published with first-place votes in parentheses.

1. Alabama (10): With Ohio State’s win over Michigan, Auburn’s six-game streak over Alabama is in jeopardy as the nation’s most lopsided big-time rivalry. Although unlikely, an Auburn upset would make the Wolverines look a little less pathetic.

2. Florida (2): Nothing says mid-November football like those classic Florida-Citadel matchups. They’re almost as good as those Wisconsin-Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo showdowns. Man, the Big Ten sucks.

3. Oklahoma (1): The Sooner seniors lost their first home game, in 2005. They haven’t lost in Norman since. The Wolverines’ seniors beat Northern Illinois in their first home game. But they didn’t quite finish as strong at Oklahoma’s class.

4. Texas (1): Former first lady Ladybird Johnson and current first lady Laura Bush went to Texas. If the Longhorns match the class of those alumnae against Texas A&M this week, they might force the Aggies into BuyOut Blues with Mike Sherman.

5. Southern Cal: The Trojans will welcome Notre Dame into the L.A. Coliseum this weekend. The Fighting Irish will probably appreciate being on the West Coast. There’s a smaller chance they get pelted with snowballs.

6. Utah: Which is more absurd? Michigan needed just a two-point conversion to send the Utes to overtime. Jared Fogle, of Subway weight-loss fame, participated in Utah game-day festivities.

7. Penn State: Before Saturday’s romping of Michigan State, Nittany Lion coach Joe Paterno announced he would be back for another season. He might become the first coach to take the nursing home shuttle to games.

8. Texas Tech: Hundreds of Red Raider fans were duped into buying fake tickets for the Texas game in Lubbock two weeks ago. At least Saturday’s game against Oklahoma uplifted their spirits. Wait.

9. Boise State: Even if the Broncos beat Fresno State, they aren’t a BCS lock. If they don’t make an elite bowl, they’re looking at the Poinsettia Bowl, which pays out $750,000. That’s a far cry from the $9 million they’d rake in for the WAC with a BCS appearance.

10. Ball State (1): The Cardinals’ football team continued to play this week. Tomorrow’s meeting with Western Michigan will be the matchup between the two. Don’t get it? Youtube “Boom goes the dynamite.”

Also Receiving Votes: Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Georgia, Missouri, Cincinnati
