NEW YORK — The upset alert wasn’t on tonight as Michigan fell to No. 10 Duke 71-56 at Madison Square Garden in the final game of the 2K Sports Classic.
Less than 24 hours after upsetting No. 4 UCLA, the Wolverines could not counter the Blue Devil’s superior execution and intelligent play making.
Sophomore Manny Harris broke the tournament record for scoring (96 points in four games), but his 25 points tonight were not enough to propel the Wolverines.
Duke had a slow start in Thursday’s semifinal against Southern Illinois and committed 15 first-half turnovers. But against Michigan (3-1), they didn’t have any trouble getting things going and penetrated Michigan coach John Beilein’s 1-3-1 zone offense.
Sophomore Kyle Singler led the Blue Devils with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. He was named the MVP of the tournament.
Midway through the first half, Duke went on an 8-0 run as Michigan took some awkward looks and missed easy baskets. The Blue Devils’ Elliot Williams drove past the defense on back-to-back possessions.
The Blue Devils (5-0) scored 20 points in the paint in the first half as part of its 15 for 30 shooting. Duke’s big man Brian Zoubeck had six first-half points. Othertimes, Duke would drive through the lane with ease.
When Michigan did stop the drive, Duke found its perimeter shooters. The Blue Devils put up 19 3-pointers, but only connected on four.
Michigan had a strong defensive effort against UCLA last night and continued to attack the glass more. Fifth-year senior David Merritt used his speed and made some early sprawling rebounds to set the tone with three early rebounds.
Michigan would pull within six points with two and a half minutes left in the first half. Duke called a timeout after Michigan scored off the fast break off a Duke turnover.
Sophomore guard Kelvin Grady and junior forward DeShawn Sims came off the bench and sparked the offense. The duo combined for 11 first-half points.
The Wolverines shot a decent .387 in the first half, but missed some easy layups and wide-open shots and would go into the locker room down 39-31.
Harris completed his drives in the second half, and Duke began to foul him. Harris’s stellar 11-for-12 from the charity stripe kept the game close.
He scored Michigan’s first five points of the second half including a fast break that ended with a dunk.
The two teams committed off setting charges as the intensity picked up midway through the second half. But the defense that had carried the Wolverines against the Bruins the previous night was not sustained, and Duke capitalized. Even when the Blue Devils would look sloppy with an airball or a lost dribble, they would find a way to save the ball.
Freshman Stu Douglass, who had 14 points against UCLA, finished with just three Friday. Douglass’s 3-pointers usually ignite the Wolverines’ offense.
Sims finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Against UCLA, Michigan spread its scoring out among Harris, Sims and Douglass who all finished in double digits, but Harris was clearly the leader tonight.
With just over three minutes left in the game, the Wolverines began to press in hopes of getting a steal. Duke was able to break it, while freshman Zack Novak made some rookie mistakes and committed a foul.
Michigan will return to action Nov 29 at home against Norfolk State.
