The Michigan Daily Top 10 Poll

BY DAILY STAFF

Published November 10, 2008

The Michigan Daily Top 10 returns for its 11th installment this season. Each week, Daily staffers will fill out ballots, with first place votes receiving 10 points, second-place votes receiving nine, and so on. The results are published with first-place votes in parentheses.

1. Alabama (10): Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban screamed at his players at halftime so harshly that he thought he pulled a stomach muscle. Then he hugged the LSU players he recruited there after the game. Once again, his allegiance is in question.

1. Texas Tech (10): The Red Raiders had a great game plan against Oklahoma State, which entered the game third in the nation in punt returns. Texas Tech scored so often, the Sooners didn’t return a punt. Mike Leach is a genius.

3. Florida (1): Gator quarterback Tim Tebow was pulled for the fourth quarter of Florida’s win at Vanderbilt. But it was because his five touchdowns helped the Gators build a huge lead. Benching because of good performance — not an option in Ann Arbor.

3. Texas: The Longhorns entered Saturday in disarray. Several players were banged up, and the team had just lost its No. 1 ranking by losing to Texas Tech. Then Texas played Baylor, so that helped. The Bears probably couldn’t come within 30 of Michigan.

5. Oklahoma: In their last four games, the Sooners’ point totals have climbed from 45 to 58 to 62 to 66. They may need to keep upping their scoring when they take on Texas Tech after a bye, since the winner of that game should have an inside track to the national title game.

6. Southern Cal (1): The Trojans play at Stanford next week. Don’t expect a repeat of last year’s upset because the Cardinals defensive coordinator isn’t Scott Shafer anymore. And they’re not even coached by a Michigan Man.

7. Utah: Utah quarterback Brian Johnson wore a Barack Obama shirt to the postgame press conference after the Utes beat Texas Christian. He said, “He did it, and so did we.” How the ultra-conservative state of Utah will take that?

8. Penn State: Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark was in tears after his dismal game cost the Nittany Lions at Iowa. He apologized to “Penn State nation.” He also owes Michigan nation an apology because he cost the Wolverines a win, too.

9. Boise State: Four players threw a touchdown pass for the Broncos in their win over Utah State. Although Nick Sheridan looked good Saturday, any of those four could probably start for Michigan — even if two of them are wide receivers.

10. Ohio State: The Buckeyes should avoid a repeat of the pre-Michigan loss they suffered against Illinois last year. Not because Illinois lost to Western Michigan this week — because Michigan is so bad, there’s no reason to look ahead.

Also Receiving Votes: Georgia, Ball State, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Kansas, Minnesota, Army
