— Junior wide receiver Greg Mathews didn't participate in the portion of Wednesday's practice that the media was allowed to attend. He wore a red jersey, which denotes the player isn't practicing, and pedaled on a stationary bike near the field.

— Rodriguez also said redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Threet's elbow is in better shape than it was last Wednesday. Threet wore a green jersey, signifying a minor injury.
— Redshirt sophomore Nick Sheridan is still the No. 2 quarterback.
— Rodriguez confirmed redshirt junior guard Cory Zirbel will miss the entire season with a knee injury he suffered before the season. The injury may be career-threatening, he said.
