The Michigan Daily Top 10 Poll

BY DAILY FOOTBALL WRITERS

Published October 21, 2008

The Michigan Daily Top 10 returns for its eighth installment this season. Each week, Daily Sports staffers will fill out ballots, with first place votes receiving 10 points, second-place votes receiving nine, and so on. The results are published with first-place votes in parentheses.

1. Texas (15): The Longhorns’ schedule doesn’t let up. For the third straight week, they play a top-25 team. This week it’s No. 6 Oklahoma State. No. 8 Texas Tech will be next. But in two weeks, it’s Baylor. The Bears probably won’t be ranked.

2. Alabama (2): With all the talk about Texas’ tough schedule and Penn State’s matchup with Ohio State, it seems as if everyone has forgotten about the Crimson Tide. Maybe some nice (Glen) Coffee will wake everybody up.

3. Penn State: The only thing more out of style than the Nittany Lion’s nine-game losing streak against Michigan is Penn State coach Joe Paterno. Just kidding, Joe. You’re the man. Who cares if you started thinking about retiring in the 70s?

3. Penn State: The only thing more out of style than the Nittany Lion’s nine-game losing streak against Michigan is Penn State coach Joe Paterno. Just kidding, Joe. You’re the man. Who cares if you started thinking about retiring in the 70s?

4. Oklahoma: Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford set the program record with 468 passing yards against Kansas. It took Michigan three games to pass for that many. The Wolverines are looking at a third of Oklahoma’s wins, too.

5. Southern Cal: The Trojans ended Washington State’s 280-game streak of not being shut out. That gives Michigan, the nation’s active leader in that category, a little more cushion (305 games). There’s a joke with Trojans winning 69-0, but we’re not going to go there.

6. Oklahoma State: The undefeated Cowboys play at No. 1 Texas Saturday, Oklahoma State’s biggest game in recent memory. It’s a good thing Cowboy coach Mike Gundy is excellent at staying composed. HE’S A MAN. HE’S 40 (41, NOW)!!!

7. Florida: The Gators are coming off a bye week and host Kentucky this week, which is a very probable win. Their football team is boring right now, so here’s a couple famous Florida alumni (in order of hotness): Bob Vila and Erin Andrews.

8. Texas Tech: The Graham Harrell-to-Michael Crabtree connection is obviously very good, but the Red Raiders’ defense has quietly played well, too. Texas A&M gained just 32 yards in the second half last week.

9. Georgia: We promised we wouldn’t make any more jokes about Bulldogs being arrested. But they had two arrests Saturday night (a DUI and driving with an expired license). Georgia = the new Miami. The Bulldogs might even take it to the 8th Floor.

10. Ohio State: Normally, Michigan State’s annual collapse begins with a loss to Michigan, but the Buckeyes might have beaten the Wolverines to the punch with a 45-7 pounding last week. So typical — Ohio State beats Michigan at something.

Also Receiving Votes: Utah, Boise State, Louisiana State
