Michigan running back jailed, released after five days

Michigan running back Kevin Grady was released from jail Tuesday morning after serving 5 days of his week-long sentence for violating his probation.
Grady, who had been placed on probation on July 2, 2008 after operating a vehicle while intoxicated around 2 a.m. with a blood-alcohol level of .24 — three times the legal limit — violated his 12-month probation period when he tested positive for opiates in a random drug screening.
On May 14, Grady plead guilty to violating the terms of his probation. Rather than prolonging his probation, Wyoming District Judge Steven Timmers sentenced Grady to seven days in jail.
Along with random drug screenings, Grady’s probation included alcohol education classes, 24 hours of community service and $1,290 in court fines.
Except for paying his court fines, “(Grady) did none of those things,” said Chris Kittman, a court administrator of the Wyoming District.
Though Grady is a resident of East Grand Rapids, Mich., his probation supervision was transferred to Ann Arbor in consideration of his football schedule.
“We did (Grady) a favor” said Kittman.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez and Athletic Department Spokesman Bruce Madej could not be reached for comment.
