Professor Profile: Gillian White

Gillian White is an assistant professor in the Department of English. She is currently working on a book about lyric and the personal in contemporary poetry, which is similar to material taught in her Contemporary American Poetry and the Personal class offered during the winter semester.

This Week in History: Fire erupts at University Power Plant

60 years ago this week (March 12, 1953):
The University’s Board of Governors of Residence Halls hiked room and board rates for the fall semester of 1953.
The Daily didn’t disclose how much the costs were raised, but a board member said it was “essentially just a question of coping with increased prices.”

UPDATED: Boil-water advisory issued for northeast Ann Arbor

Update: The city lifted the advisory after tests showed no contamination at 3 p.m. Friday.
The city of Ann Arbor has issued a boil-water advisory for northeast Ann Arbor, an area that includes the Northwood V Apartments and several University buildings.

Alumni Profile: Takeshi Yamada

At a young age, Takeshi Yamada, who received a Masters degree from the University in 1987, developed a passion for collecting natural specimens. He pursued his interests through art degrees and became a rogue taxidermist, creating stuffed animals based on types of animals that do not actually exist.

After approximately 20 years of work, Carl June and his research team have made a breakthrough in T-cell immunotherapy, a type of emerging cancer treatment, The Daily Pennsylvanian reported Monday.
